Quercetin Benefits for Dogs
Quercetin offers many benefits for dogs from helping with allergies, joints, aches and much more. Find out all the benefits and how I healed my dog with it.
Ok, so here's what happened last week. One of my most beloved dogs, my pack leader actually...well I woke up and as I looked at her face, I was like, 'something is off with her face. Her face is swollen!!!! O-M-G!!!!!!!!!!'

Then I took the dogs out and she happily went out - wagging her tail and full of energy. I then looked at her face even more clearly and yup - it was clearly swollen. Her cheeks were thick and it was just her cheeks that were swollen. As I inspected her closely, I could see that...

My first thought was whether this was some allergic reaction because she does go outside on her own (she is super trained dog) and I did see her digging her face in the grass...so maybe something was there that could have caused this reaction? Hmmmm.....

And then I was like thinking what needs to be done to get this swelling down fast.

So, first thing is I massaged her cheeks area with some castor oil - it is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and boosts blood circulation fast. So that was my first action.

2nd - I started thinking what to give her internally...if this is an allergic reaction so how to bring the swelling down then?

One of the things that happens to me in situations like these where I am now responsible for healing one of my OWN dogs with my holistic knowledge that I have learned over the past 20 yrs is that my mind has substantial array of items or products like herbs, oils, supplements, spices, native remedies, Ayurvedic remedies...you name it...oh boy!, that feels overwhelming, doesn't it?!

So it's like browsing my mind through all of these before making the decision!!

Anyways, I decided I am going to go with one of my most favorite supplements...ever....though neither I nor my dogs ever use it and that is because we have never needed it by God's grace!

That miraculous supplement is quercetin..:) But I didn't have any so I searched in nearby grocery stores and Vitamin Shoppe, stores like Target so I can just go pick it up right away but the one I wanted wasn't there or definitely not in the store..

I am been cutting my online shopping because of the wastage the online shopping produces and what it is really doing to our planet and the landfills...so if I buy something from amazon, then I make it a bulk order (so everything comes in one order) and these are items that I cannot find locally...plus these are mainly for health like herbs, etc.

I wanted quercetin mixed with nettle so it will be even more fast acting as nettle is an excellent herb for allergies and also wanted one with bromelain so it can reduce the pain and discomfort if she has any though she seemed perfectly fine otherwise and even ate her food right away.

So I then went on amazon and searched fast and settled on one that gave me the right combination - I ordered it for same day delivery and it arrived in the afternoon. Her swelling was pretty bad so just being able to order it and get it in the afternoon was a huge blessing! In this case, I have to say, 'thank you amazon!!' because I was very worried.

I started her with 1 full dose - 1 capsule, open and mix in pumpkin puree and gave it to her.

Then early next morning - I think I gave her another capsule and then same day, late evening I gave her 1/2.

Within 24 hrs., her swelling was down by 70%.

I continued...and 2nd day, it went down to 90% and by 3rd day, almost gone but very little there.

So, here are the quercetin benefits for dogs -

-it can help your dog with allergies and respiratory issues

- it is considered as "nature's Bendryl" and this is because it offers antihistamine benefits to your dog

-it can help with skin issues, itchiness, paw licking, red eyes, runny noses or coughs or skin reactions due to allergies as quercetin is anti-inflammatory properties

-quercetin also offers anti-cancer benefits with its antioxidant rich benefits and helping the immune system boost immunity and therefore may help inhibit cancer cell growth

-it also protects the body from oxidative stress and free radical damage

-quercetin is great for dogs with respiratory issues like asthma, bronchitis, labored breathing or senior dogs or dogs with weak lungs and collapsed trachea

The Fun Plot Twist -

The day I started her on this, my mom told me that it doesn't seem it is from allergic reaction to something on the bayou...

Because few of my dogs will go sit on the couches in the living room with my mom and so what had happened was as Tini (the one with swelling) was sitting on the couch, the 2 other dogs were playing and as they jumped up, they mistakenly bumped or hit Tini's face..

Then it just clicked - Tini had made a sound...nothing big or dramatic but I had heard it while I was in the room doing my work. I immediately got up and went to see if all was ok.

Tini still continued sitting on the couch and other dogs had settled on the couch too so all was well indeed. Later on, when it was bedtime, all the dogs came in the room to sleep and so did Tini..she seemed perfectly fine.

It took about a day or 2 for her swelling to show fully but after remembering this incident, I thought whether it is slight injury or allergies, either way I would need quercetin to calm the histamine response a.k.a swelling in this case.

So thank God!! All I can say happily is my plan to give her this supplement and my knowledge to choose the right support for my dog was exact and it worked.

Had I been naïve and gone to the vet, they would have run the bill to over $600 - vet fees, blood test, x-ray, meds and God knows what else...

Oh....and in between, I kept massaging some arnica gel too.
